The Overdrive Off light comes on after driving a few miles. When the button in
the gear selector is pushed, the transmission does not respond.

O/D off light lighting up without driver input indicates a transmission fault. Possible overheating. You can scan the car for the codes to verify. How is the fluid level and color?
