I have a Toyota tercel 1997 4door automatic it. spits and sputters when u try to start it and backfires and when u come to a stop an start driving u have to push the gas pedel down to gain speed

Back firing is an indication of either a timing issue or a fuel issue. I would check to see if the engine has jumped time, the timing belt may have jumped time and is in need of replacement. If there are a lot of miles on the timing belt, 70,000 - 100,000 it is over due to be changed. You want to check this out because depending on the engine that is in your car, it could be a interference engine, and the possibility of bending valves.
