Is it possible to disconnect the drive shaft to the
rear axles on an all wheel drive vehicle and drive
safe

Why would you want to? If you think your MPG will go up, it will only go up about 1MPG if that. If it is a maintenance reason, I would get it fixed before pulling parts off.
