Ticking noise

Asked by GuruHBT6Y Jul 15, 2019 at 01:11 PM about the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox LS AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had the oil changed do to a tick along with
the oil pressure sending unit. After this was
done the car had a terrible ticking and lifters
rattling. The mechanic said it takes awhile for
the oil to circulate. Driving it home and the
noise went away. About 40 miles from home
the car began to chug and loose power then
the oil pressure light came on and the car
died. I was able to restart it to make it to the
shoulder but now the ticking and lifter rattle
is twice as loud. Checked the oil and the
dipstick says it’s full no oil or fluid leaking.
What could be going on?

Maybe used the wrong oil filter and oil is not circulating, From your description you are having an oil issue, so do not drive it at all. It does not "take a while" for oil to circulate, you can crank the motor (with fuel pump relay pulled to prevent motor from running) to build up oil pressure, after running for a few seconds the engine should have full oil pressure and lubrication, if not, damage can result. I would have primed the oil pump just to make sure you had full oil pressure at first startup, so not sure what your mechanic was thinking. At this point you need to put it back in a shop (not necessarily the same shop) and have the oil pump evaluated, as well as possible damage due to running without oil pressure.
