2004 Avalon shifter starting issue

Asked by May 02, 2015 at 05:44 PM about the 2004 Toyota Avalon XL

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Avalon would not start. Checked everything. Turned key on, put in gear and back in
park and it fired right up. It has done this several times and is not working every time.
The wife feels stranded. Is this an easy fix?

Avalon's are notorious for being complex but no harm in looking here. All wires must be snug, one time on a Toyota I had a rat (or some varmint) chewed a wire......click for full screen

Can I access the switch from underneath or do I need to remove the console?

Underneath. The mechanism in the console is the wires to the plug on right, if the problem was in there, in the console you would not be able to get it out of Park at all. I have been really looking for a solenoid also, so far can't find but there has to be one. If it starts in neutral, every time it might be that solenoid
