I'll bet it's not a fuse- I've got a '98 XLS too. Might only happen every tenth or fiftieth time you start it, but AC will cut off and usually outside temperature display will go blank at same time. Google "Toyota AC005-99" and it will take you to a service bulletin that describes your problem. Repair is too expensive for a 14yr old car- so far I just live with it. Would love to hear from anyone who has tried a cheaper way- like swapping ATC for manual controls.
