2005 toyota 4runner

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The Emission system needs to be replaced as the check engine light is coming on. How much does this cost

2 Answers

The 'emissions system' consists of many parts. To say the entire emissions system needs to be replaced is not practical or reasonable. It is everything from EGR to catalytic converter and much more. You need an OBDII scan to point you to what is faulty. The CEL being lit could be hundreds of things. If a mechanic told you that the emission system needs to be replaced he is dishonest and you should go to a dealer or another shop and avoid that place like the plague. Yes, the OBDII was implemented for emissions in 1996 but now, on a 2005 Toyota does much more. There is no way of giving you a $ figure without specific codes.

Just wondering.... did you make an assumption that because the Check Engine Light is on it is an emissions problem or did a shop tell you that?
