The overheating problem is most likely caused by air trapped in the cooling system. Use the bleeder valve near the thermostat to release trapped air and add coolant as needed to fill it up. You may have to drain it and refill it if the problem persists. Doing all this with the car facing uphill can also help bring trapped air to the top of the system so it can be released. Did the engine run poorly before you changed plugs and wires? If not, I would check that they are on in the right order. After that scan it for trouble codes. That will likely tell you why it’s in limp mode. Once you know that you can do some proper trouble shooting to determine what, if anything, needs replacing.

If you have not changed out any ignition parts in about 100K miles, that will probably fix the sputtering problem but you should have the codes read to determine if other things need attention. A deteriorated catalitic converter will also cause the same type of poor operation.

sputtering and overheating in a 16 year old car is caused by a badly clogged catalytic converter.
