What's the best affordable way to upgrade my engine

I have a 2000 grand prix 3.1 v6

Buy a better car. You could spend a lot of money on your engine and still be way slower than a V8 car or even a newer V6.

I agree. The 3.1 doesn't give you much to work with. Sell it and buy a GTP. That gives you performance right out of the box and there are lots of aftermarket things you can do to it that must make it better.
