Your directional signals will not trigger a "service engine soon" message light. If the problem does not seem to be a single bulb, try replacing the flasher relay located under your dash. It is a metal can about 1-2 inches in diameter and has a wire harness plugged into it on its bottom side. Buy a new one (about $5) then go look for it under your dash panel.

When you say "losing power" do you mean that they slow down or they don't work at all? If they don't work at all there's a chance it's the hazard switch. This was a pretty common problem with these cars. There's a YouTube video on how to change the switch; I did mine in about 15 minutes. The switch cost $20.
