02 Grand Am GT Running Really Rough! Help!

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

One morning I got into my car & started it
up & it was running really rough. Almost
like it was shaking. I had driven it just the
night before & it was perfectly fine. It's an
02 but it only has 145,000 miles on it & it
had been a great running car till now. I did
just have a tune up & oil change done not
long before all this started.

When I actually put it in reverse was when
it runs the worst. It still drives but has that
constant roughness. When I get on the
highway I have no acceleration problem.
It's the worst sitting idle, backing up & you
can still feel it going under 45 mph. I've
been told it's the cadillac (so) converter,
but I don't lose power.

Also, it does smell really bad. I was also
told that it's "missing"? Something having
to do with the spark plugs & the gas in
there? I need HELP! I don't know where to
start? I also lost my gas cap & a guy
working at the parts store told me that
that would cause my car to run that way.
Is that true? I wouldn't think so, but I don't
know?

Any help at all will be greatly appreciated!

Catalytic converters can plug up restricting the exhaust flow, and cause an engine to run rough. Google/Youtube how to test restricted exhaust / bad catalytic converter for more info. FYI if it smells like rotten eggs, it's definitely the cat.

Thanks I'll look it up. It doesn't smell like rotten eggs. Like gas & fumes really.
