clicking sounds after i have take key out of igniton

why does the lincoln town car cartier 2003 make clicking sounds when i put the
key in and just let it sit without turning the key.

I suspect the worn ignition switch is trying to make a connection and somewhere there are relays trying to energize with a weak power connection.
