1998 mark vii electrical issue spoke coming out of rear lights

was driving home spelled eletrical burning smell  smoke was coming out of tail lights now NO LIGHTS IN BACK WORK

Your rear tail lights don't work becuase the wires connecting them burned up. You had a short and the wires heated till they burned. Have the wiring replaced and inspected to see what the cause of the short was. Could be a bad connection due to corrosion.
