2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Misfire

Asked by Jan 24, 2017 at 09:45 PM about the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My original problem was that my Jeep was overheating when idling. We took it to a mechanic and they replaced the water pump. The same night as it was being driven home the lower radiator hose became unattached due to mechanic error. Now with the hose reattached and fluids added by the mechanic I have more problems. My engine light came on, the code was for a cylinder 8 misfire. The mechanic replaced the spark plugs and coil. It still threw the same code. The researched it and found it was the rocker arm. They repaired that issue. All seemed well. Then driving it home tonight the engine light came on again, same code, engine 8 misfire. They pressurized the system and said everything was fine. What else could be going on? It is not running rough like it had been previously except when you are about to stop and goes away when completely stopped.

Check the other coils. Ignition coils don't like to be sprayed with hot coolant. Had the same thing happen to me with my 2000 Grand Prix (different vehicle, I know). A coolant elbo burst and sprayed hot coolant everywhere. After I repaired that it was throwing a misfire code on cylinder number 3. The coil pack had gotten the brunt of the hot coolant spray and it was fried. Replaced the coil pack and cleared the computer and it's been fine for the past year. HTH
