01 Audi

Asked by David Sep 19, 2017 at 01:53 PM about the 2001 Audi A6 2.7T quattro Sedan AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I accelerate a light pops on. A circle around a
triangle with a exclamation mark in the triangle. It only
does this when I accelerate and the ABS  also pops on at
the same time. My check engine light has also been on. Is
this connected? I don't know much about cars and just
recently bought this car a couple weeks ago. I usually
have my kids in this car and I am worried something is
wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello David. The triangle light you described is your ESP or Electronic Stabilization Program (traction control). Check to see if your brake lights are working or have they come on when the car was off? It would be hard to notice since most cars brake lights face away from the house, but it was something I observed after parking one day after receiving the same lights pop up on my dash. A lot of times it's the brake pedal switch located under the dash. The part does not cost much from the dealer (buy OEM when it comes to this part) and you can replace it with simple tools (remove lower dash panel, unplug switch, remove and replace). The trick with the switch is be patient when removing and replacing as you have to twist it and there are locking tabs that you don't want to break. If you or someone you know has VAG-COM (Volkswagen/Audi Diagnostic Tool) it would be best to get it scanned to check for any other codes. In my case I was getting those two lights randomly and the brake switch was the culprit. Best regards, Danny

Thanks Danny! The right back tail looks gut was not working when I bought it. After buying a new bulb still wouldn't work. Put in a new fuse and now it works but still pops up on dash the light is out

Ok, are you still getting both lights on the dash as before? If so, it could very well be the brake light switch. After years of toggling on and off it will wear down the contacts and cause issues. If your car is a 4-pin it should be part #4A0945515A. I replaced mine with a genuine Audi switch, but they changed the design mid year 2002 so mine is different in price and construction. You can opt for the Febi Bilstein switch which is less than $10. I just remembered you have a check engine light as well. Most of the time it is related to emissions, but your car will also store codes that don't cause the light to come on. I would get your car scanned by a local auto parts store (Autozone does it for free where I'm located) and write down any other stored codes be it emissions or not.

Well today on the way from work I was going down the freeway and it was raining really hard so I went to put my headlights on and lost all power in the car.. Each day it's something new. I stopped at the store and saw in the window every time I hit the brakes my right headlight would pop on.
