I had the same problem on a 1997 ranger. It's where the filler tube meets the tank, there is a gasket there that can crack / break. They will need to lift the bed off to access it, I was quoted $500 for the fix. You can live with it by driving on a quarter tank and driving without knee jerk movements. I highly suggest fixing it because the gas is also vaporing out...it could catch fire. Cough it up and fix it.
