transmission problems

just put in a transmission and every thing is hooked up right but still wont move in reverse or drive but while in park and press on the gas it shoots foward. what could be the problem

There are many factors that would cause such problem, however, to highlight the most common reasons: 1- Bad shifting cable (replace cable) 2- Shifting cable mounting bracket loose (adjust and tighten shifting cable bracket. 3- Internal shifting rod out of place or broken (need transmission work, worst case) If the car starts in Part and Neutral and not in any other position. reason number 3 is the most possible.
