Won't start or stay on

Asked by Jan 21, 2018 at 09:47 AM about the 1997 GMC Savana Cargo G2500 Cargo Van

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Driving stopped at light it goes dead no warning
acts like the battery is dead. .try jumping it still
acts like the battery's dead i have a new alternator.
And i tested the battery said it's full ...all it would
do is click click click then after trying over and
over it started but died  as soon as it started ..
I'm thinking it's shoring out somewhere but where?

sounds like low battery voltage. if the battery is 4 years old or older its time for a new one.


Usually you can use digital multimeter across battery posts, everything off, the generic spec for a full charge is around 12.6 volts. Leave the meter leads hooked up to battery, have helper turn key to crank, how far does the reading drop, generally it shouldn't drop below 9 volts. The point is, if it drops to zero, you got a problem. If it doesn't drop at all or not much, there is an open circuit, somewhere. The diagram is part of your starter circuit.
