2020 GMC Savana Cargo

GMC’s Savana Cargo van is a work vehicle for tradesmen, contractors, and others who need to move tools and equipment to and from worksites. It’s offered with seating to accommodate between one and five people, and its massive cargo space allows it to haul or tow heavy loads to accommodate most contractor or workman needs.
The Savana Cargo is offered in two versions (2500 and 3500), each of which is available with two wheelbases: 135.2 and 155.1 inches. GMC offers four engines in the Savana. A 4.3-liter V6 rated at 276 horsepower and 298 pound-feet of torque is the base engine. Optionally, a turbodiesel 2.8-liter 4-cylinder rated at 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque offers better efficiency. Both are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Two 6.0-liter V8s rated at 341 hp and 373 lb-ft are available, one fueled by gasoline, the other by compressed natural gas or propane. Those get mated exclusively with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Every GMC Savana Cargo van has rear-wheel drive (RWD) and comes with a 3.42:1 axle ratio. Towing capacities vary by configuration between 6,000 and 10,000 pounds, and payload capacity does, too, from 3,507 to 4,582 pounds. A locking rear differential, which evenly distributes torque between the rear wheels, is optional.
The Savana Cargo is a stripper model that comes with only the bare essentials so buyers can add equipment based on their needs. Standard equipment is basic: air conditioning, an AM/FM audio system with MP3 capability, power windows and door locks, 4G LTE WiFi hotspot capability, and a 120-volt AC and two 12-volt DC power outlets. Multiple packages are available. The Safety Package adds blind-zone alert and rear park assist. The Enhanced Convenience Package brings remote start, keyless entry, and heavy-duty trailering equipment. The Communications Package includes niceties such as Bluetooth phone pairing, a tilt steering wheel, and cruise control. There’s also a Hotel Shuttle Package that replaces the standard sliding side door with swing-out doors and adds rear-door windows.
GMC offers additional equipment to help tailor the van to workmen’s needs. Two roof racks are offered in addition to several a la carte window packages, which add glass to the van’s sides or rear doors. Cargo management and towing accessories, including hitches, are also offered.
Without a high-roof option, the Savana Cargo lacks one feature many tradesmen need in a van: the ability to stand up inside. Consider the Nissan NV, Ford Transit, and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter if that’s a deal-breaker for you and the Savana. But don’t overlook its price, which starts in the low-$30,000 range, making it among the least costly of all cargo vans.
