There are a gazillion possibilities for the check engine light to come on. You need to get a code reader and hook it up under the dash. It will tell you what the problem is. Any good mechanic will have a code reader and it only takes a minute to hook it up and find out what the problem is.

I had same problem but it had multiple failed head gasket repairs and needed another one. Had leaking power steering fluid and coolant going into the engine which may have contributed to overheating (very dangerous) but I have also heard there were fan problems causing it to overheat. Mechanic could not get the "check engine" light off and it was a head gasket problem again.
