I have a 2002 ford escape that wont shift into 1st gear unless I manually shift in to first

Asked by May 14, 2015 at 01:31 PM about the 2002 Ford Escape XLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I put it in drive it will free rev up to 2000 to 2500 rpm then slam in to gear. If I shift it manually it works fine. Once in drive I have no problems until I slow down below 20 mph. Then I have to down shift by hand. What would be the fix for this?

Sounds like the solenoids are getting sticky, when was the tranny serviced?
