Water Leak Under Steering Column After Rain

Asked by jmesplie Nov 23, 2018 at 04:55 AM about the 2015 Lexus RX 350 AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Four weeks ago had a big downpour of rain, driver
side floor board was soaked all the way thru,
check engine and AWD track error came up.  A
few days later car didn’t start.  Took it into shop,
they replaced wires and dried interior.  Car worked
for a few weeks no issues.  Last night rained again
and drove car this morning, took a corner and
water hit my leg again and error lights came back
on the dashboard.  I imagine all This water is
dangerously close to all the electrical stuff
underneath. Don’t want to pay $200 every time it
rains so I’m curious where would the water be
coming from to end up where it’s leaking?
Sunroof?  Windshield?

I had two things going on: the drainage holes in the sunroof area were apparently full of debris from the previous owners so that had to cleared up. The other issue was that I had a poor seal at the bottom of the windshield so the water was draining straight down into the dashboard area. I replaced the windshield as it was easier than fixing the seal. Cleared out the debris in the sunroof, had the shop strip and clean the connectors that were affected by the water. No issues since then and I washed my car today, no leaks or stuff coming up on my dashboard.

We’ve had the same problem. Got the car from my 85 year old mom. Had a strange odor when we got it which she thought had appeared after she had a bag of fertilizer spill in her car. She had always garaged it and probably didn’t drive in the rain whenever she could avoid it. My son drives the car and it is now parked outside. We’ve had an insane amount of rain here in California this past winter. The carpets started to get soaked. After googling, we decided it must be from a clogged sunroof drain. My husband did his best to clear it and we lifted the carpet and used fans for days trying to dry it all out. Finally got it dry, only to have it rain again. I went to move the car and made a U-turn in front of our house and heard the horrible sound of sloshing water. We then brought it to a Toyota dealership (labor cheaper than Lexus). We thought we hadn’t cleared the drain completely and they knew just what to do. After clearing the drain, they drove the car through the car wash to find that it was still taking on water. They followed the leak and took apart the back to find that the car was “coming apart at the seams.” Not quite as bad as it sounds. There are seams right above the two arms of the trunk hatch. These couple-inch seams were never welded. We were told it was a manufacturer’s defect. Hardly seems possible that the huge amount of rain was coming through there, but that seems to be the case. We were told to take it to a body shop to have it welded. We may try silicon caulking first and see if that does it.
