Why does my 97 cavalier 5 speed grind when I put in reverse it only does it when the car is rolling

Never try to put it in reverse while rolling, you can mess up the synchros. The best way to use reverse is to make sure the car is stopped, put it in low gear then use reverse gear, putting it in low will stop all movement inside the trans.
