trying to put distributor back in but not sure if we have @1  on top

Remove the spark plug and put your thumb over the spark plug hole. Using the ignition, have a helper bump the starter until you start feeling pressure building against your thumb. That's the compression stroke. Now watch the timing mark on the harmonic balancer. Line up the mark with the 0 on the sawtooth scale. If you don't have this set up, use a large screwdriver and put it in the spark plug hole after you start feeling the pressure build under your thumb. Using the screwdriver as a gauge when the piston is at the top of the cylinder, you're there. HTH. -Jim
