I have a 2001 Lincoln town car executive.  I would like

to pull a U-Haul trailer. I purchased a class II hitch.

I'd go with a professional so that it doesn't fall off . U-Haul will insist that it's mounted to the frame .

When you buy a hitch kit, it tells you what cars are applicable to it and the kit provides installation instructions either in print form or a link to online. But the proper kit for your car and follow the kit's instructions.

Yup, a class II hooked up to your car can pull up to 3500lbs. But for how old the car is, don't overload the trailer, I would worry about the drivetrain on your car, namely burning out the trans.
