can i start my 2001 pontiac sun fire by turning the ignition starter switch with a screwdriver i just got a new ignition but some reason the lock on the bottom of the tumbler will not slide in and lok

i have the new ignition switch but some reason it wont lock into place on the bottom of
tumbler i turned it  all kind of ways put it in right but it just seems like it dont go in far
enough is there a trick i would just like to get it started could i start it by turning the
ignition starter switch with a screwdriver?

I know you have to have the trans in park to pull the key out. Is that mechanism preventing you from lining things up on the tumbler?
