I drove my frineds G37 into work today and it almost shut down on the highway. What could be wrong?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I got the car to the side of the road and it would not get above 1000 rpm before it shut down. I shut the car down and turned off the heater. Then I started it back up and it ran fine. Then when I got to my exit I saw the temperature run up from normal to hot. I shut it down and popped the hood to find that the engine did not seem hot at all.

It would help to know if this was an auto or manual transmission and if regular maintenance had been performed. Did you drive over a pothole or anything that could have jarred a loose connection somewhere? Did the car make any noises? Did electrical go out (gauges, stereo, etc)? Were you driving the vehicle hard (5k+ rpms)? Was the oil changed on time? Is there anything leaking? Check the battery connection and make sure it is on there tight. Check all the fluid levels.

Driving a manual transmission. Car rpms are constant but the car gets sluggish. Feels like it is downshifting. Once I restart car, drives fine for a while.
