4wd will not engage

Asked by leaker Dec 05, 2007 at 05:49 PM about the 1998 Chevrolet Blazer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

In a snowstorm yesterday, when I pushed the 4wd Hi button it went on for a second and then flashed back to 2wd and the 4 wheel would not engage.  4 wheel Low worked but not 4wd Hi.
What's the deal?

sounds like problem with mine, under hood remove battery and battery tray, you will see a diaphram with a cable going straigh up through it,check rubber on diaphram if cracked or torn replace 4x4 will work again these vehicles work off of cable,ps dealer part only. about 40 bucks.

Agreed, it's probably a diaphragm problem, this is 90% of the issue with these 4WD setups.
