Won't start

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Mom has a 2007 Lincoln MKZ.  The problems she has is that sometimes
when she goes out to start it the battery is dead.  She is retired so she
doesn't always drive every day.  She keeps it garaged, and she always
leaves the keys in the cup holder.  My husband is now wondering if the key
fob will slowly drain the battery.  She can have it jumped or put it on the
trickle charger my husband has left for her, and it will start right up after
awhile.  Just can't figure out what is causing this to happen, and my husband
just asked me this morning if she always leaves her keys in the cupholder.
And I told him that she does.

She has had the battery checked and rechecked, replaced and rechecked. It still does the same thing. She will keep it on a trickle charge if she knows she won't be driving for awhile. My husband has put it on a diagnostic tester and nothing is showing. Just a mystery and that is all we could think of

I also have a 2007 Lincoln MKZ. I also have been leaving my key Farb in the cupholder. I have the same problem and I have to use a trickle charger. My son and daughter just called my attention to this so I am taking my keys inside the house from now on to see if it makes a difference

Is there something that remains active when the vehicle is off such as an air compressor for an automatic leveling system? My 94 Fleetwood, that I don't drive much, is like that. The compressor for the automatic leveling system will cycle on periodically to maintain the vehicle height even though the ignition is off and locked. This will kill the battery in just a few days of not using the vehicle. I installed a disconnect switch on the negative battery cable to solve this problem. Hope that helps! Jim

Thanks for your input Jim , but I don't think my Lincoln has anything that you described your Cadillac as having. Right now I am going with The theory maybe leaving the key fob in the cupholder was somehow draining the battery. The keys are in the house, it will be interesting to see if the battery holds a charge. Other than this problem, my Lincoln has been a very good car.

Hi Jim So far my car is starting like a champ! I am holding my breath but I'm really beginning to think as crazy as it sounds that leaving my keys in the cupholder was causing the problem. I guess I'm getting old but we are just living in crazy times . So much technology , the average person doesn't have a chance keeping up with it.
