We found a car on your site that is being sold by a private seller. What do we need to do/ look for to make sure we do not get taken advantage of?

Question type: General

I want to make sure we get everything we need if we decide to buy from a private seller. What do we need? How do we know the title is a clear title? what other documents should we be getting from the seller? this is our first time buying a used car

Talk to your seller if they have maintenance receipts or other documents such as an owners manual with the car. They sign the title over when you go to the local notary, they will tell you want documents to sign and what you need. You can do a carfax on the VIN yourself if you want to know the history or use this site......https://www.nicb.org/theft_and_fraud_awareness/vincheck

The notary will tell us? Also, after we purchase the vehicle we then need to go and register it with Motor Vehicle under our name correct?

Depending on your state some notaries take care of licensing. ...http://www.edmunds.com/sell-car/how-to-close-a-used-car-sale.html
