06 chevy uplander overheating in a matter of minutes

Asked by Shay Jun 10, 2019 at 02:34 PM about the 2006 Chevrolet Uplander

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Recently our uplander started overheating very quickly. in a matter of minutes it reaches critical temps. we replaced the thermostat and the water pump and are still having the same problem. the van will only blow out cool air vs hot air and we noticed some sludge/ build up in the radiator. could it be that it just needs a radiator flush or is it something more extensive. my dad who is a diesle mechanic is baffled that the water pump didnt fix the issue. Any other ideas on what im dealing with here?

You might have a sludged up radiator, but first look/see if the radiator cooling fans are coming on at the right time. They remove a lot of heat while parked or moving in slow (25mph) traffic. At highway speeds (60mph) they would not have to come on at all.

yes the fans are kicking on when it starts to get warm and when in slow moving traffic so i know its not the actual fans that are bad...

Is it really over heating? Have you taken the temperature? It could be a bad temperature sensor. The coolant should have been flushed and replaced when you replaced the water pump.
