Is driving with my MAF sensor unplugged safe, short term?

Asked by Loca495 Jun 14, 2019 at 01:44 PM about the 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I own a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1 V6 and I'm pretty sure
the MAF is faulty. I've taken if out to clean it with MAF
cleaner, and it didn't help. I read that if you unplug it while
the vehicle is running and it runs better, it's likely a faulty
one. Well, it does run better. Way better. I had some recent
expenses that have left me with exactly 3 bucks in my
pocket until next payday, about a week and a half from now.
I know if it's unplugged I'll get terrible MPG, but other than
that, am I going to damage the car at all? It's gotten to the
point that I constantly have to rev the engine to keep it
running if I leave it plugged in, the idle fluctuates from 400-
900rpm. With it unplugged, idle stables out at a steady 800
and it drives great.

Eventually it could cause your spark plugs to fail and ultimately cause engine damage. I wouldn't recommend not fixing this issue but for short therm you can do it and I would say no highway speeds
