Car will crank then dies.

Asked by Mar 03, 2018 at 11:54 AM about the 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 94 cutlass supreme cranks but immediately
dies. I have replaced the fuel pump, and cam
sensor.  It will idle as long as I keep spraying
starting fluid in it.

This sounds like a security system failure, it shuts off the fuel pump if the code is not right or the system is in full lockdown, is the little red light on steady all the time or no light at all? It should be blinking. Check in the owners manual for a disarm procedure. If that fails you may have some inactive door switches and will need the system checked out by someone that knows this old system.

I presume you changed the fuel filter along with the fuel pump?? Just a thought.

Yes I changed the fuel filter, the camshaft sensor, and the idle air control valve. The security light is blinking and doesn't stop.

Ok try running the standby protocol listed in the owners manual for the security system.
