My brake lights will not go off. Is this the switch at the top of the pedal, or should I be checking something else?

Yes I would look at the brake light switch that you mentioned first. It could be bad or just out of adjustment.

Problem: 2000 Nissan Frontier Brake Lights will not go off and results in a dead battery. The brake light switch was replaced and did not correct the problem. I removed the adjusting nut and screwed the switch in all the way. Still did not resolve the problem. The solution for me, was the plastic button on the brake pedal arm that turns the brake lights on and off was broken and had to be replaced.

Yes, thought I could fix this myself. Bought the part but it is impossible to set the button because of a steel plate that sits underneath it. Now what?

Went to gas up my 2001 Frontier on Sunday. Noticed the brake lights were still on. Returned home and went on the internet to seek solution. Found plastic button from brake stop switch on floorboard. Tried to get to the switch, but found countless obstacles to getting to the switch. Quit and pulled the fuse to keep battery from running down. Called Dealer on Monday and got quote of $45 for both stop switch and ASCD switch buttons replaced !! Drove over to dealer and 45 minutes later was on my way. Cheap and quick!

Pain to install but got it wrapped around my index finger with floss. Turn on engine to get brake pedal to slide down a bit more. Doable but tough.. Nissan dealer $11.90 ea had already order from amazon and cancelled since it wouldn't be here until the 4th. I've include a picture with the part number you'll need. Good luck all and thank you for this.. would not have know wtf I was dealing with otherwise!!

i fixed mine today.after reading about the button broken i called our local repair shop and he said yes it was common problem and that he replaces them all the time.he said he kept the buttons in stock.so i drove to his shop and purchased one.came home and installed it.lights didn't go out.so i checked the other switch and that one was broken also.the shop didn't have any more in stock so i used a 3/8"`dia.x1/2 long hh bolt and nut.job is finished and lights are out. thanks for the info.

I had the one for my clutch pedal switch as well as the two on my brake pedal (brake light & cruise control) all 3 crumble to pieces all at the same time. The local NAPA auto parts wanted $19.00 each for the genuine Nissan part. I almost fainted at the price. I'm a tight wad so I went to the local hardware store and picked up 3 each automotive plastic panel clips for .35 cents each. Working great so far.

Which one is the break light switch that turns on the break lights on 1999 Nissan Frontier

Auto parts store did not have the actual Nissan button but did have one for Honda. The stem on the button was too small but a little gasket cement and I installed it - hopefully works. A real pain to get to just like everyone else says. I removed the front dash and steering column covers ( total of 7 screws I think ). I used a set of forceps to hold the button and that helped a little picture enclosed.
