I keep having to replace my battery

Asked by Gabbygray Nov 25, 2013 at 04:16 PM about the 2009 Lexus RX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

In September 2012 I replaced ,my battery.  My car stopped today and I was told the battery was dead and drained.  I have a 2009 Lexus RX 350, is there a reason why my battery keeps dying?  Could it possibly be the starter or alternator rather than the battery?

I had the same model same battery drain issue many times over the last two years. It appeared to occur only at super cold days like below freezing temp. The battery seems fine as I have had the same battery for two years. Frustrated at the dealer refusing to acknowledging the draining issue.

Ja08016 and Dashan - I had the same problem with a 2007 RX 350. We went through about 4 new batteries and 1/2 a dozen trips to the dealer to attempt figure out why the battery would go dead in a week in the Summer and within days in the Winter. A root cause - never found. THEN... one day the sliding cover that covers the rear view mirror button got jammed and would not open fully. Why? We had our local shop fix the door, only to find that a GPS unit had been Velcro'd underneath the dash, and in years it the Velcro had come loose - the GPS unit jamming the rear view mirror sliding door. It was the GPS unit - always on 24/7 that was draining the battery all those years. We had acquired a pre-owned FLEET car that had had at GPS Tracking box in it. Constant battery drain. Now the black GPS box has been removed. Clearly, there is NO battery drain at all. For 4-5 years we growled at Lexus, thinking there was some sub-standard, defective, battery sucking computer or electrical feature that was the cause of the dead battery. Buzzz, wrong. It was the Fleet GPS installation. So if by chance you have a pre-owned vehicle, make sure it's not a FLEET car or one that has had a GPS or other hidden battery sucking device installed in it.

I have a RX 350 and a rav 4. Same issues fix for RX 350 go to page 148 of owners manual tells how to disable communication between key fob and vehicle- which over a number of days can kill battery. Fo my older rav 4 page 107 of owners manul both in index under battery saving function under electronic key.
