How critical is it to replace a harmonic balancer on a 1990 Trooper 2.6L who's timing mark has begun to move. Can't I just remark the new mark temporarily by finding TDC ? Which I've done before.

I was behind a pickup one night when a ball,of sparks started flying from under the truck, skirted across the oncoming lane and nailed a car going the other direction, the truck stopped the other car stopped, I stopped, the truck had a hole in the radiator and a bent fan, the car had a gash in the drivers front fender with the ring of the vibration damper still in it. So that is what can happen at any time once the ring starts moving. Don't mess around with this if it comes off and does damage you are liable.
