The Kia Soul does have a timing belt. It must be changed at 60000 miles. If it does break it will cause severe damage to the engine! The cost to replace the belt is affordable and a bargiain if you consider the altereative.

In the US there are two motor options for the 2010 Soul. 1.6L motor is timing chain driven. 2.0L motor is belt driven. Like Ron said I would recommend replacing the timing belt on the 2.0L motor at 60,000 miles.

yes you have a timing belt if you have the 2.0 liter engine, No you dont have to change it until the 100,000 mile mark. the 60,000 mile is an inspection only.

Michael, thanks for that info. I called my local Kia dealer, and the master technician said 60,000 miles. So did a mechanic on the following forum: http://repairpal.com/what-is-the-normal- mileage-for-replacing-the-timing-belt-and-what-other-parts- need-to-be-rep-844 Where are you getting your info that the timing belt doesn't need to be replaced until 100,000 miles? Thanks, Andy

IS changing the belt a repair job for the average home mechanic?

Still, nobody gave a mileage for checking the timing chain on the 1.6L. Does anyone know?

Hey GuruDGBKJ, slightly above average job for the home mech. Easier than others though still. Judging by the estimate of $450 for a shop to do, it shouldn't amount to too much trouble. Especially if you use a (silver?) Sharpie and mark the pulleys and belt with markings, then transfer those markings to the new belt, then line it all up again.

AFTERGLOWZ there is no scheduled maintenance to timing chain motor. timing chains can stretch but they give signs like rattlling. Usually a timing chain tensioner would give out before the chain itself. in my experience chains can last well over 200k.
