I would imagine it wasn't running all that well before it died. Any dash light? That aside- stall, rough - could be lots of stuff from really, really cheap and easy to not so cheap and easy. I ALWAYS START with the simple things first. How much gas in the tank, gas filter, air filter, work towards gas flowing, spark. So it depends on your level of d.i.y. knowledge as to how much (if anything) you will do yourself.

check engine light was trying to tell you to, at the very minimum ,check.Again - can't give d.i.y. advice to someone that isn't at least a tad knowledgeable. you can learn to do some basic stuff as a car owner but getting your first lesson should come from a friend standing beside you pointing to stuff and telling you what to do.
