mass airflow sensor

Asked by Feb 05, 2016 at 09:15 AM about the 1999 Ford Windstar Cargo

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Computer check revealed rich fuel and oreillys tol
me the mass airflow sensor was the oroblem. I
first tried to clean it but the same problem arose
which was car dying while driving with no other
problems. Car ran smooth idled fine but once in
awhile it would just die at any speads. I got the part
from and changed it. Now my
car sounds rough and there's a huge puff of white
cloud that comes out the exhaust. I put back in the
old mass airflow sensor and the smoke is no
longer present and the van runs smoothly but
engine light still comes back on. I haven't ran the
car longer then a couple minutes with the new part
because I worry that there part is gonna cause
damage to my vehicle. They are standing their
ground that their part is the right part and saying
something else is wrong with the vehicle. However
if that was the case then why is the problem
resolved when I put in the original part on? Should I
allow more time running the vehicle with the new
part and actually test drive it to warm up the car or
the fact that it sounds rough and has the huge
amount of smoke coming out of exhaust suggest
that there part is the problem and shouldn't be
driven with the new part? If they in fact did send
the wrong mass airflow sensor will it cause
damage to drive with it?

It maybe the right part but what to say that there is something wrong with it, this where a "live data" scanner will tell the tale, it will show what the computer is reading from every sensor in the engine control system, so you could actually see the out of specs sensor. Was the part a new one or remanufactured unit?

It's new but it's a knockoff brand. Supposed to be garenteed to fit.

I'd still say that there is something wrong with the new sensor simply cause it runs better with the old one in place. What was the codes that lead to the MAF?

They just told me that it was reading rich fuel. I know nothing about cars and this is my first time doing work other than the hose to the radiator and battery. I took Oriellys word for what was wrong

Rich could also be O2 sensors, did they happen to mention something like bank 1 sensor 1 or bank 2 sensor 1 ?

No they did mention that it could be either the o2 sensor or mass airflow but that the issues sounds like it was the mass airflow sensor

UGGH before going any further I would go to a shop you trust, tell them what has happened and what you have found with requards to the old and new sensor, see if they confirm that a live data scann would be the best option at this point in time. I'm sure you don't want to spend any more money than you have too.

Thank you for your help
