Most cars are set up to have 2-3 gallons of fuel for reserve. I never recommend driving till the light comes on. The fuel pump needs some fuel to keep it cool and you don't want to run out of fuel or burn the pump out.

Cadillac gauges are set up that way. Once you drop below 3 gallons, you either get an L (low fuel level) or an E indicating 2 gallons left and, finally a flashing E that says you are under a gallon. As TOM indicated, you do not want to drive around with less than 2 gallons showing (E) or you may burn up the pump.
