Intended for utilitarian use, the 2008 GMC Canyon Work Truck is minimally outfitted. A 2.9-liter, 185-hp DOHC I4 engine and 5-speed manual transmission deliver 190 ft-lbs of torque in this rear-wheel drive mid-size pickup. A 4-speed automatic is optional, along with the 242-hp, 3.7-liter I5 engine. The 2008 Canyon Work Truck sits on 15-inch wheels with all-season tires and rides on an independent front and live axle rear suspension. It features a 6-foot pickup bed with tie-downs and a light. The tailgate opens out 90 degrees or at a 55 degree angle so you can rest long objects on top of the wheelwells. There is one row of seats for two passengers, which is available as either a bench or reclining bucket seats.

4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, dual front airbags with a passenger sensor, side impact door beams, automatic headlights, and a tire monitor earn four and five stars in crash tests. Side curtain airbags, foglights, OnStar, traction control, and a locking rear differential can be added. Though just a work truck, the 2008 Canyon WT does come with cruise control, tilt steering, air conditioning, a radio, intermittent wipers, a tachometer, and front power outlets. Vinyl upholstery is standard. A CD/MP3 player and cloth seats are available. The 2008 Canyon WT rides smoothly and gets decent 17/24 mpg, but its I4 engine can only tow 4000 pounds.

The Regular Cab version of the rear-wheel drive 2008 GMC Canyon SL comes with one row of 60/40 split-folding seats, to fit two to three passengers. The 6-foot pickup bed is deeper than those of other mid-size pickup competitors, and comes with tie-downs and a tailgate that folds out to both 55 and 90 degrees. A sliding rear window provides access from the cab. A 2.9-liter, 185-hp DOHC I4 and 5-speed manual is the standard powertrain, though a 4-speed automatic can be substituted. So can a 3.7-liter, 242-hp DOHC I5. Towing power maxes at 4000 pounds, and gas mileage is a pretty good 17/24 mpg. The 2008 Canyon SL uses 15-inch wheels with all-season tires.

Moving up to the SL adds new standard foglights to the safety features, which include 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, dual front airbags, side impact door beams, a tire monitor, automatic headlights, and OnStar. The pickup gets four and five stars in front crash tests. Side curtain airbags, a locking rear differential, and traction control can be added. The interior comfort is limited, but the 2008 Canyon SL does come with cloth seats, a leather steering wheel, and a trip computer. There is not much difference stepping up from the SL, but the 2008 Canyon SLE-1 does feature a CD/MP3 player with radio data, alloy wheels, and upgraded cloth upholstery. Also standard are intermittent wipers, a trip computer, leather steering wheel, tilt steering, a tachometer, and air conditioning. More options are available for the SLE-1, including a power package (windows, locks, and mirrors in the SLE-2 package), remote entry, and a 6-CD changer. Satellite radio is another extra.

The pickup rides on a Z85 heavy-duty front independent and solid live axle rear suspension, utilizing 15-inch wheels with all-season tires and chrome bumpers. Though it comes standard with the same 2.9-liter, 185-hp DOHC I4 and choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic as the Regular Cab, the 2008 GMC Canyon SL Extended Cab adds 15 inches to the wheelbase, to add two jump seats in the back. With the optional 3.7-liter, 242-hp DOHC I5, this rear-wheel drive mid-sized pickup can tow 5500 pounds. The front row bench splits 60/40, while access to the rear seats is through three-quarter, reverse-hinged rear doors.

The 2008 Canyon SL Extended earns top safety ratings due to standard 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, side impact door beams, and dual front airbags with passenger deactivation. Also included are new foglights, OnStar, a tire monitor, 15-inch wheels with all-season tires, and automatic headlights. A locking rear differential and side curtain airbags for both rows are optional. Still more of a consumer utility truck than a family vehicle, the 2008 Canyon SL Extended's upgrades include a leather steering wheel, a trip computer, and cloth seats. Already standard are cruise control, power steering, a tilt steering wheel, intermittent wipers, a tachometer, a radio, and air conditioning. Cupholders and power outlets reside only up front.

The pickup bed is 6-feet long, with deep sides, tie-downs, and a fold-down tailgate that stays locked in either a 90 degree or 55 degree position (to rest objects on the wheelwell). Options to the 2008 Canyon SL Extended include a CD/MP3 player, satellite radio, a sunroof, and alloy wheels.

Though it's a four-door, the rear doors are three-quarter size and reverse-hinged. The bigger size means the 2008 Canyon SLE-2 Extended can tow up to 5500 pounds with the optional trailer wiring. Tow hooks are standard, along with tie-downs and a folding tailgate.

Under the hood is a standard 3.7-liter DOHC I5 matched to a 4-speed automatic, delivering 242-hp and 242 ft-lbs of torque. Fuel economy is around 17/24 mpg. Safety features include 15-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, side impact beams, and dual front airbags. With the Extended trims, 18-inch wheels are optional. One year of OnStar is newly standard, along with a tire monitor, automatic headlights, foglights, and halogen lamps. Side curtain airbags for both rows cost extra. The SLT also adds a temperature display and compass. These standard features are in addition to a full power setup, power-folding mirrors, remote entry, cruise control, intermittent wipers, front and rear cupholders, a leather steering wheel, chrome accents, and a trip computer.

The rear-wheel drive mid-sized pickup has a 126-inch wheelbase (thus, the Extended), though the second row barely fits normal-sized adults and is only accessed through small reverse-hinged rear doors. The 6-foot pickup bed is separated by a sliding window and comes with tie-downs and tow hooks. The folding tailgate can be positioned flat or at a 55-degree angle. Trailer wiring is optional, for a 5500-pound towing capacity.

An off-road suspension can also be added for more confidence. Power comes from a 185-hp, 2.9-liter DOHC I4 that delivers 190 ft-lbs of torque, matched to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. For more heft, you can add a 3.7-liter, 242-hp I5. The front independent and solid live axle rear suspension rides on 15-inch wheels with all-season tires. Electronic throttle control and rack and pinion steering smooth out the ride.

4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, dual front airbags with passenger deactivation, automatic headlights, side impact door beams, a tire monitor, and daytime running lights are joined by newly standard foglights and OnStar in the 2008 Canyon SL 4WD. Side curtain bags and a locking rear differential are optional.

The mid-sized pickup is sparsely outfitted, but does do the Work Truck one better by adding cloth seats, leather steering wheel trim, and a trip computer. Power steering, a tilt steering wheel with cruise control, intermittent wipers, a tachometer, a radio, and air conditioning are all standard. There is only one row of seats, a 60/40 folding bench (bucket seats can be substituted), with two cupholders and two power outlets. The 6-foot bed comes with tie-downs. The tailgate folds out nearly flat or at a 55 degree angle, which is the height of the wheelwells. A CD/MP3 player and satellite radio top the options list, which also includes privacy glass, alloy wheels, and tow wiring.

The Regular Cab version of the SLE-2 seats two in the front split-folding bench seat, which can be replaced by buckets. A front independent and rear solid live axle suspension support the 2008 Canyon SLE-2, which rides on 15-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires. The SLE-2 also comes standard with more horsepower, in the form of a 242-hp, 3.7-liter DOHC I5, matched only with a 4-speed automatic.

Along with the added standard features comes cruise control, intermittent wipers, a CD/MP3 player with radio data, OnStar, a trip computer, tinted glass, a tachometer, and front power outlets. A sliding rear window looks out onto the 6-foot pickup bed. The tailgate folds and locks in two positions for two-tier storage. Tie-downs and tow hooks are standard, and trailer wiring can be added. Towing capacity hits 4000 pounds in the 2008 Canyon SLE-2.

Moving up to the 2008 GMC Canyon SLE-2 Crew Cab version of this rear-wheel drive mid-sized pickup gets you extra room for two adults in the backseat, four regular-sized doors, but a shorter 5-foot bed. The second row bench also split-folds for more versatility. Combining family-friendly and utilitarian features, the 2008 Canyon SLE-2 Crew Cab can tow up to 5500 pounds with the optional trailer wiring. Tow hooks are included, along with tie-downs, and the folding tailgate can also be removed in the Crew Cab. Two-tier storage in the bed is a nice feature, thanks to a tailgate that folds flat or at wheelwell level.

A 3.7-liter, 242-hp I5 is standard, paired only with a 4-speed automatic. Fuel economy rates around 17/24 mpg. Using a heavy-duty suspension and 15-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, the 2008 Canyon SLE-2 Crew Cab can be outfitted with an off-road suspension and larger 18-inch alloy wheels. Earning four and five stars in crash tests, the pickup features 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, dual front airbags, side impact door beams, OnStar, foglights, automatic headlights with halogen lamps, and a tire monitor. Safety options include side curtain airbags for both rows, traction control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a locking rear differential.

Chrome decorates the bumpers and is carried over into the interior trim, along with a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Larger wheel flares and body-side molding can be added to the exterior. Power locks, windows, and mirrors, and remote entry are standard, along with cruise control, a CD/MP3 player, intermittent wipers, and a trip computer. Also included are a tachometer, tilt steering, tinted glass, front and rear cupholders, and front power outlets. A power sunroof is a nice, if not practical, option, and both a 6-CD changer and satellite radio will keep riders entertained whether you're on a road trip or a work detail.

Moving up to the 2008 GMC Canyon SLT Crew Cab, the top of the line for this mid-sized pickup, gets you four full-size doors and two rows of seats. The extra legroom in the rear and the split-folding bench seat are possible because the bed length has been shortened to five feet. The rear-wheel drive 2008 Canyon SLT Crew Cab is the most luxurious of the bunch, with leather upholstery, heated front seats, and power front seats (8-way driver, 6-way passenger). Another Crew Cab upgrade is the removable tailgate, which also folds flat and at an angle level with the wheelwells, for two-tier storage. Tow hooks and tie-downs are standard, but trailer wiring costs extra.

A 3.7-liter, 242-hp DOCH I5 gets 242 ft-lbs of torque and is paired with a 4-speed automatic with overdrive.The 17/24 mpg is adequate for a pickup of this size. A heavy-dutry suspension can be replaced with an off-road suspension package. 15-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, dual front airbags, side impact beams, and 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes earn the highest ratings in crash tests. Other nice features include OnStar, automatic headlights, a tire monitor, auto-dimming rearview mirror, foglights, and halogen lamps. Traction control is optional in the rear-wheel drive Canyons. Also available are side curtain airbags and a locking rear differential. Body-side molding and wheel flares can be added to the exterior, which is dressed up in chrome on the grille and bumpers.

Front and rear cupholders are only the beginning of the interior bells and whistles. Cruise control, a CD/MP3 player, full power features, intermittent wipers, trip computer, temperature display and compass, and leather steering wheel are all standard. The chrome theme is carried over to the instrument panel. Tilt steering, a tachometer, and front power outlets are also included. A sunroof is optional, along with one year of satellite radio and a 6-CD changer.

Crew Cabs in the 2008 GMC Canyon lineup only come in SLE trims, and the 2008 Canyon SLE-1 Crew Cab offers more standard features, such as power locks, windows, and mirrors, remote entry, and cruise control. More family than work-oriented, the rear-wheel drive mid-sized pickup extends the wheelbase to 126 inches, but comes with a smaller 5-foot pickup bed in order to provide more interior room. The 2008 Canyon SLE-1 Crew Cab has four regular-sized doors and two rows of seats (front bucket and rear split-folding bench). As such, it increases the number of cupholders to four in both front and back.

A 2.9-liter, 185-hp DOHC I4 is standard, with the option to substitute a 3.7-liter, 242-hp I5. A 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic are the transmission choices. The pickup rides on a Z85 heavy-duty front independent and rear live axle suspension, but an off-road suspension package can be added. Dual front airbags are standard, and side curtain airbags for both rows are optional. Other safety features include 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, side impact door beams, halogen lamps, foglights, automatic headlights, a tire monitor, 15-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires, and OnStar. Traction control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a rear locking differential are optional. The tailgate in the pickup bed folds and can also be removed in the 2008 Canyon SLE-1 Crew Cab. Tie-downs are standard.

A leather-wrapped steering wheel, tilt steering, a CD/MP3 player with radio data, a trip computer, tachometer, intermittent wipers, front power outlets, and chrome bumpers are also standard. Upgrading to the Crew Cab version of the SLE-1 adds a sunroof option as part of the Sun and Sound package. The SLE-2 Extended 4WD features a longer wheelbase to allow a second row of jump seats, accessed through small reverse-hinged rear doors. The 6-foot pickup bed remains, separated by a sliding rear window. Tie-downs are standard, along with a tailgate that folds out and locks in two positions. Tow hooks are also standard, and trailer wiring can be added, to tow up to 5500 pounds.

Moving up to the SLE-2 means a more powerful engine, a 3.7-liter DOHC I5 that boasts 242-hp. A 4-speed automatic is the only transmission. The 208 Canyon SLE-2 Extended Cab 4WD rides on 15-inch alloy wheels, though 18-inch can be substituted. 4-wheel ABS and disc brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, dual front airbags, and side impact door beams earn high marks in side impact tests. Automatic headlights, foglights, halogen lamps, a tire monitor, and OnStar are also part of the package. Paying a little extra gets you side curtain airbags for both rows, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a locking rear differential. Traction control is not an option for the 4WD trims.

A full power setup includes remote entry in the 2008 Canyon SLE-2 Extended Cab 4WD. Other nice standard features for a pickup are cruise control and a CD/MP3 player with radio data. A heavy-duty Z85 front independent and solid live axle rear suspension provides a sturdy feel, but can be replaced with a specific Z71 off-road suspension. The 4WD comes only with 15-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires. A 3.7-liter, 242-hp DOHC I5 and 4-speed automatic provide the power, 242 ft-lbs of torque, and a 5500-pound towing capacity.

Added safety and security comes in the form of 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, dual front airbags, side impact door beams, OnStar, and a tire monitor. Side curtain airbags for both rows are optional. The 2008 Canyon SLT Extended 4WD upgrades to an auto-dimming rearview mirror, along with automatic headlights, foglights, and halogen lamps. A cross between a mid-sized work truck and family hauler, the 2008 GMC Canyon SLE-1 Extended Cab 4WD offers more versatility with its part-time 4WD system. Its low-range gearing can be taken off-road, and if you substitute the Z71 off-road suspension for the regular Z85 heavy-duty one, you'll get an even more surefooted ride off-pavement. A choice of 15 or 18-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires is available, along with two different engines -- a 2.9-liter I4 that delivers 185-hp and 190 ft-lbs of torque, or a 3.7-liter I5 with 242-hp and 242 ft-lbs. Transmissions include a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. Fuel mileage sits around 17/24 mpg.

With 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, and dual front airbags, the 2008 Canyon SLE-1 Extended Cab 4WD earns top safety marks. Automatic headlights, halogen lamps, foglights, side impact door beams, a tire monitor, and OnStar are also standard. Side curtain airbags, a locking rear differential, skid plates, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror are optional, but traction control is not offered. The 2008 GMC Canyon SLE-2 4WD rides on a Z85 heavy-duty front independent and solid live axle rear suspension, along with 15-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires. There is no traction control option in the 4WD Canyons.

As a Regular Cab model, the 2008 Canyon SLE-2 4WD has two doors and seats two people on a split-folding front bench. Being a Crew Cab means two rows of regular-sized seats, but only a 5-foot pickup bed. Tie-downs, tow hooks, two-tier storage capability, and a folding and removable tailgate are all standard. An optional trailer hitch allows you to tow up to 5500 pounds. A sliding rear window accesses the cab. Though the heavy-duty Z85 front independent and solid live axle rear suspension is standard, an off-road Z71 suspension can be added for a firmer ride. 15-inch alloy-wheels with all-season tires keep this mid-sized pickup on the road, and in the Crew Cab form it seats four in two rows with four full-size doors. The rear bench split-folds, and a sliding rear window opens onto the 5-foot pickup bed that comes with tie-downs and a removable tailgate.

With the standard 2.9-liter, 185-hp DOHC I4 engine, the 2008 Canyon SLE-1 Crew Cab 4WD can tow up to 5500 pounds. It gets 190 ft-lbs of torque and is paired with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. A 3.7-liter, 242-hp I5 is optional. Four and five-star safety features include side impact door beams, dual front airbags with passenger deactivation, 4-wheel disc and ABS brakes, automatic headlights, foglights, halogen lamps, and a tire monitor. One free year of OnStar is included. Side curtain airbags for both rows, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a locking rear differential cost extra. Traction control does not come with the 4WD Canyons.
