Nissan Altima History

The Nissan Altima was first introduced in 1992 as a 1993 model. In the U.S., it replaced the much-maligned Nissan Stanza and was a re-badging of the Japanese-sold Nissan Bluebird.

The Altima was billed as an "affordable luxury sedan" and was somewhere in between the Sentra and the Maxima in terms of power, size, and amenities. It competes with vehicles like the Honda Accord, the Mitsubishi Galant, and the Pontiac G6.

The newest Altima was released in 2006 as a 2007 model as part of Nissan's overhaul of many of its cars. The new Altima includes options often found in higher-end cars, such as push-button start and Bluetooth capability.

Nissan's first hybrid vehicle will be an Altima, expected to go on sale in 2007. A coupe is expected in 2008 or 2009.
