Reviews Summary

Fortunately, Nissan appears to be happy with it: The automaker’s midsize truck gets just a few minor tweaks, mostly in the form of additional standard features, in the second year of its current iteration. We spent a day putting the 2023 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X through its paces on- and off-road.

Reviews Summary

The Ram Power Wagon is a beast off-road and looks like it chews up and spits out lesser 2500-series heavy-duty pickup trucks for fun, but it’s also a purpose-built tool that isn’t easy to live with on a daily basis. The Ford F-250 Tremor and GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4 may not match the Power Wagon for sheer adventuring capability, but they retain more towing and payload capacity than the decal-decorated Ram, which can tow no more than 10,590 pounds and carry no more than 1,630 pounds of payload. Enter the new 2023 Ram 2500 Rebel. Problem solved.

Look and feel
2023 Nissan Frontier
8/10
2023 RAM 2500
8/10
The 2023 Nissan Frontier, continuing its design inspired by the iconic 1986 Hardbody, largely maintained the aesthetic updates introduced in the previous year. The Frontier boasted an array of trim levels—S, SV, Pro-X, and Pro-4X—with the latter two trims featuring Lava Red interior accents that added a vibrant touch to the cabin. The Midnight Edition, available on the SV trim, offered a sleek, all-black theme that appealed to those preferring a more understated appearance. In contrast, the 2023 RAM 2500 boasted a robust and rugged look, particularly with the introduction of the Rebel trim, which mirrored the Power Wagon in aggressiveness but skipped the winch and bold graphics for a cleaner profile. The RAM 2500’s imposing stance was further emphasized by its larger 20-inch wheels and sporty aluminum hood, aimed at those who value both functionality and style in a heavy-duty truck.
Performance

The Nissan Frontier came equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 engine that delivered 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque, which when combined with the nine-speed automatic transmission, provided a responsive yet somewhat busy driving experience on highways. It offered both RWD and an optional 4WD system, with hill-start assist and hill-descent control, enhancing its off-road capability, particularly noted in the Pro-4X model. On the other hand, the RAM 2500 Rebel featured a more powerful standard 6.4-liter V8 engine generating 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. Additionally, an optional 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel enhanced the performance lineup, pushing out 370 horsepower and an impressive 850 pound-feet of torque, though at a significant cost increase. The Rebel’s part-time transfer case and sophisticated suspension system facilitated a surprisingly refined driving experience for such a heavy-duty vehicle.
Form and function

Interior space in the Nissan Frontier varied with the cab configuration; the Crew Cab being more spacious and equipped with modern conveniences such as hydraulic-assisted tailgate and innovative storage solutions. The 5 and 6-foot bed options along with under-bed lighting provided practical cargo management, complemented by robust skid plates for off-road protection. The RAM 2500 Rebel, while requiring a bit of a climb to enter, offered a substantial and luxurious cabin, particularly with premium leather and advanced seating comfort, including heated and ventilated functions. Despite lacking some ergonomic finesse like the column shifter feel, the interior boasted ample storage and a highly functional cargo space with options like locking bins and an assistive bed step, pushing the boundaries of convenience in heavy-duty trucks.
Technology

Technology in the Frontier centered around connectivity and entertainment, with wireless Apple CarPlay available on higher trims, multiple charging ports, and an optional Fender sound system that promised an immersive audio experience. The inclusion of a 9-inch touchscreen on higher trims represented class-leading tech in mid-size trucks. The RAM 2500 Rebel, however, excelled with its advanced 12-inch digital instrumentation panel and comprehensive camera systems that included trailering enhancements for easier handling of heavy loads. Also outfitted with the Uconnect 5 system, the Rebel offered an impressive array of tech features that were both functional and user-friendly, albeit with some visibility issues under direct sunlight.
Safety

The Nissan Frontier was equipped with essential driver-assistance features like forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking across all trims, with more advanced functions available on upper trims or as add-ons. The truck’s safety was duly recognized with a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA. Similarly, the RAM 2500 Rebel was packed with advanced safety features that supported both passive and active safety. These included systems such as adaptive cruise control and automated emergency braking, enhancing both comfort and safety, although it lacked official crash-test ratings due to its classification.
