Reviews Summary

Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But luxury SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.

Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).

Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating New York City streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

Reviews Summary

The mid-size SUV has room for seven (barely) and comes in Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige trims. There are two different engine choices, but all Q7s, regardless of trim, are all-wheel-drive (AWD) with excellent handling characteristics. However, this second-generation Q7 has been around since 2017, and it shows in some key areas.

Verdict: While the 2025 Audi Q7 has a lot going for it in terms of driving dynamics and engine prowess, it falls behind the competition when it comes to safety tech. Further, the third row is cramped for anyone but the smallest of humans, and the price can skyrocket as you move up the trim line.

Look and feel

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

2025 Audi Q7

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer presented a classic SUV aesthetic, sharing its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer. This resulted in a traditional design featuring a tall hood, broad shoulders, trapezoidal wheel arches, and an upright profile. The Grand Wagoneer distinguished itself with a standard black roof, model-specific hood, front fascia, and grille, which leaned forward slightly with laser-etched knurling in the slots. The vehicle's body-on-frame architecture allowed for independent suspension, and weight-saving materials like an aluminum hood and doors were used. Inside, the Grand Wagoneer offered high-end features such as 24-way power front seats with memory and massage functions, Nappa leather upholstery, and American Walnut wood trim, setting it apart from the standard Wagoneer.

The 2025 Audi Q7 showcased a refreshed design with a new front fascia, standard Matrix-design LED headlamps, and updated daytime running lights. The exterior styling was streamlined for a cohesive look, with customization options available for the front bumper, door trim, and rear diffuser. The Q7 offered eight color choices, including the new Sakhir Gold, and three wheel options. Inside, the updates were minimal, with new wood and carbon trim inlays. The interior featured a copious amount of piano black, stacked infotainment screens, and HVAC vents stretching across the dash. The third row was notably cramped, suitable only for children, and cargo space was limited compared to rivals.

Performance

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

2025 Audi Q7

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine, delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, enabled the Grand Wagoneer to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in six seconds, despite its hefty 6,400-pound weight. The vehicle came standard with a Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system, featuring a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential. The Quadra-Lift air suspension system was also standard, offering adjustable height for various driving conditions. With a maximum ground clearance of 10 inches, the Grand Wagoneer could tackle off-road challenges, although its size limited its trail capabilities. The ride was smooth at lower speeds, but the vehicle felt ungainly at higher speeds due to its bouncy ride and imprecise steering.

The 2025 Audi Q7 offered two engine options for the Premium and Premium Plus trims: a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with 261 horsepower and a 3.0-liter turbo V6 with 335 horsepower. The top Prestige trim featured the larger engine, providing smooth power delivery through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Q7 excelled in handling, with minimal body roll and firm brakes, aided by available all-wheel steering. However, the steering feedback was lacking, and the transmission's downshifting was inconsistent. The Q7 offered multiple drive modes, including Comfort, Dynamic, Individual, All Road, and Off Road, catering to different driving preferences. Fuel economy for the 55 TFSI engine was rated at 18 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined, slightly below competitors.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

8/10

2025 Audi Q7

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer accommodated seven passengers with standard second-row captain’s chairs or eight with an optional third-row bench seat. It offered more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. However, front-row space was more limited. Cargo capacity was generous, with 27.4 cubic feet behind the third row and 70.9 cubic feet with the third row stowed. The maximum cargo space of 94.2 cubic feet was less than some rivals. The Grand Wagoneer boasted a towing capacity of 9,850 pounds, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to its extra weight. Standard features included a sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, and a 360-degree camera system.

The 2025 Audi Q7 featured heated eight-way power-adjustable front seats with four-way lumbar support, with the Prestige trim adding a Bang & Olufsen stereo system, 360-degree camera, and ventilated and massaging front seats. The Executive package offered four-zone climate control and heated rear seats. The third row was cramped, suitable only for children, and folding the second row was cumbersome. Cargo space was limited, with 14.2 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 35.7 and 69.6 cubic feet with the third and second rows folded. Small storage spaces were also limited, with a shallow center console and small door pockets.

Technology

2025 Audi Q7

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer featured a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a McIntosh audio system. Second-row passengers had a 10.25-inch touchscreen for climate control, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system added two 10.1-inch screens. The Grand Wagoneer also offered a 10.25-inch touchscreen for the front passenger, Amazon Alexa connectivity, and Fire TV for Auto. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system, based on an Android operating system, supported over-the-air updates. However, the screen response was slow, and the instrument cluster graphics were plain.

The 2025 Audi Q7's Multi Media Interface (MMI) infotainment system was housed on a 10.1-inch center screen with a smaller screen for HVAC controls. The digital gauge cluster was configurable, and the menu structure was user-friendly, though the screen required a firm push. Audi's navigation system, featuring Google Maps, was a highlight, and the Audi App Store offered third-party program downloads. The Q7 included online navigation and traffic light information for three years, with a six-month trial of high-speed Wi-Fi. The myAudi app allowed for customization with 110 themed wallpaper options.

Safety

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

2025 Audi Q7

6/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer had not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA. Standard safety features included a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features included a driver-attention monitor, night vision, and traffic-sign recognition. Active Driving Assist combined adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering, with a hands-free version planned for future release.

The 2025 Audi Q7 came equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems, including blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. The Q7 could park itself, but the lane-centering system was less robust than competitors. The NHTSA awarded the Q7 five stars overall, with four stars for front crash and rollover. The IIHS had not yet rated the 2025 model, but the 2024 model received top marks in crashworthiness and seatbelt safety.
