2023 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is living on borrowed time. The current-generation model has been on sale since 2017, and while it still seems fresh as a daisy, seven years is a long time in the automotive world. In addition, aside from a new Rhodium White premium paint option, Mazda makes no other changes to the 2023 CX-5. Furthermore, the CX-5 now lives side-by-side with the Mazda CX-50, and when you consider the existence of the CX-30, the upcoming CX-90, and the rumored CX-70, well, it certainly doesn’t seem as though the CX-5 will remain in Mazda’s lineup for much longer.

2023 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2023 Nissan Rogue is critical to the automaker’s success. Last year, this compact crossover SUV was the 16th best-selling vehicle in America, significantly outselling the company’s Altima midsize sedan and every other Nissan available in U.S. showrooms. Two years ago, Nissan redesigned the Rogue. Last year, it added a new turbocharged engine. Now, for the 2023 model year, the Rogue SV is available with a new Midnight Edition package that blacks out the exterior trim, while the Rogue Platinum adds Amazon Alexa compatibility. Still, the Rogue faces fresh competition from the redesigned Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage, the all-new Mazda CX-50, and a plug-in hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander.

Look and feel

2023 Mazda CX-5

8/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

8/10

When comparing the aesthetics of the 2023 Mazda CX-5 and the 2023 Nissan Rogue, both vehicles boasted their unique styles that appealed to different audiences. The 2023 Mazda CX-5 emanated a sense of luxury that belied its price point. With high-quality materials throughout and a design aesthetic that could easily rival more upscale brands, the CX-5 offered a refined and sophisticated environment. Its top-of-the-line version, the 2.5 Turbo Signature, was particularly plush, featuring premium Nappa leather upholstery and an overall build quality that felt more akin to a luxury compact SUV.

Conversely, the 2023 Nissan Rogue adhered to a more conventional but still appealing design language. It featured well-proportioned, rugged aesthetics that aimed to convey a blend of robustness and elegance. The Rogue's Platinum trim level, with features like soft leather seats and high-quality interior materials, did edge into the luxury territory in terms of comfort and feel, even overlapping in pricing with entry-level models from luxury brands.

Performance

2023 Mazda CX-5

8/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

In the performance arena, the CX-5 and Rogue diverged significantly. The Mazda CX-5 offered a choice between a competent 187-horsepower standard engine and a much more exhilarating 256-horsepower turbocharged variant. The turbocharged engine, especially when fueled with premium gasoline, provided a robust driving experience characterized by ample torque and an engaging ride. Mazda's emphasis on driving dynamics was evident, with enhancements that minimized body roll and improved overall vehicle agility, making the CX-5 especially fun to drive on twisty roads.

The Nissan Rogue featured a new turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine using a variable compression technology intended to balance performance with fuel efficiency. Despite this innovative engine producing 201 horsepower, it sometimes felt underpowered, particularly during highway passing maneuvers. While the Rogue offered a comfortable ride suitable for urban and suburban settings, some may find the engine's unique characteristics and the CVT's behavior less satisfying compared to the Mazda's more traditional and spirited driving experience.

Form and function

2023 Mazda CX-5

6/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

Both SUVs catered well to the needs of families and individuals seeking practicality without sacrificing style. The Mazda CX-5's recent updates improved front-seat comfort significantly, enhancing the overall ergonomics. However, it lagged behind in terms of interior space. The cargo capacity was decent at 59.3 cubic feet with rear seats folded, yet it doesn't top the segment. In contrast, the Nissan Rogue excelled in this category. It offered up to 74.1 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats down and introduced functional elements like the Divide-N-Hide storage system that provided versatile cargo solutions.

Despite its ample space, the Rogue's rear seat comfort was criticized, with the seating position and cushioning not matching the comfort found in its front seats. On the other hand, the CX-5, while offering plush materials and a generally comfortable interior, also faced critiques for its constrained rear-seat and cargo dimensions compared to some competitors.

Technology

2023 Mazda CX-5

3/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

Technology in both vehicles showed strengths but also pointed to some weaknesses in user interface designs. The Mazda CX-5 featured the Mazda Connect system, which although sleek in appearance, was often criticized for its complex control logic and lack of a touchscreen, making it less intuitive to use. Meanwhile, the Nissan Rogue's infotainment system, though not as modern as some might prefer, provided straightforward usability with physical knobs and buttons complementing its touchscreen for easier control.

Safety

2023 Mazda CX-5

10/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10
Safety technologies aboard both vehicles were comprehensive. Mazda's CX-5 featured an array of advanced driving aids under the i-Activsense suite, and its crash safety ratings were excellent, making it a reliable choice for safety-conscious buyers. The Nissan Rogue also offered a robust set of safety features, including the Safety Shield 360 suite, and while it generally received good safety ratings, its performance in some of the newest IIHS crash tests indicated room for improvement.
