The 2023 Jeep Gladiator retained much of its rugged charm with minimal changes to its model line. A standout was the Gladiator Freedom Edition, paying homage to servicemen and women with its military-esque design and features like gloss black wheels and a body-color fender flares, combined with utility-focused add-ons like a steel bumper and rock rails. Its look is distinctive and utilitarian, leading with a unique open-air driving experience that sets it apart in the mid-sized pickup segment.

In contrast, the 2023 RAM 1500, particularly the Limited trim, leaned into luxury and sophistication. Our test model, featuring the Night Edition package, embraced a more muted, stealthy appearance with a blacked-out grille and 22-inch black aluminum wheels, offering a starkly different aesthetic to the Gladiator. The RAM presented a polished and upscale feel, thus appealing to a different set of stylistic preferences.

The Gladiator Mojave, equipped with a 285-horsepower V6, specialized in off-road capability enhanced by its Fox shocks and high-clearance flares designed for optimal performance in rough terrains, though it also managed urban environments impressively. However, the Gladiator's engine and off-road focus contributed to a louder, rougher ride at higher speeds and less efficient fuel economy, averaging around 17.3 mpg.

The RAM 1500, equipped with a 395-horsepower Hemi V8 and optional eTorque system, excelled in smoothness and power, providing an effortless driving experience with quick acceleration and generous towing capacity. The eight-speed automatic transmission and optional air suspension in our Limited tester significantly elevated ride comfort, seamlessly handling both highway speeds and payload demands.

Inside the Gladiator, space utility was evident despite some inconveniences like tricky rear seat access. It offered practicality through features like drainable floorboards and a modestly spacious cargo bed, along with off-road conducive additions like a protective bedliner and portable Bluetooth speaker. The payload capacity, although best-in-class at 1,710 pounds, was limited by the smaller 35.5 cubic-foot steel cargo box.

RAM 1500's interior was a testament to thoughtful design and functionality. With vast storage solutions including the multifunctional RamBox, and luxurious touches like reclining rear seats and a versatile, technology-equipped tailgate, the RAM stood out in comfort and utility. It also boasted a remarkable combination of towing and payload capacities, reinforcing its capabilities as a full-sized pickup.

Technologically, the Gladiator was modest but adequate with standard connectivity options and specific features geared towards enhancing the off-roading experience, like the TrailCam and Off-Road Pages. Its infotainment system, though not cutting-edge, supported essential digital needs for adventurous drivers.

The RAM 1500's tech suite was far more expansive, highlighted by a massive 12-inch infotainment screen that offered advanced connectivity and customization. Additional tech perks like a digital rearview mirror and comprehensive surround-view camera system marked the RAM as a leader in automotive technology within its class.

Safety features in the Gladiator were basic, with optional groups adding essential driver-assistance technologies like adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring. Its overall safety ratings were mixed, with some concerns over its structural integrity in rollover situations.

Conversely, the RAM 1500, despite its initial lack of standard advanced safety features, offered robust optional systems, significantly enhancing towing and traveling safety. Its superior crash test ratings from both NHTSA and IIHS reflected a stronger safety profile compared to the Gladiator.
