Jeep offered the 2023 Compass in five core trim levels as well as some special-edition models. The base Sport and Latitude trims received a new 17-inch wheel design, while the Trailhawk variant's wheels were painted in gloss black. The Compass Red editions could be purchased in black or silver paint in addition to the signature red. Inside, the two-tone black and gray cabin showcased caramel accents and did not look or feel cheap, thanks to digital displays, metallic trim, and low-gloss plastics.

Contrast this with the 2024 Toyota RAV4, which aimed to present a tougher look. Characterized by its frowning grille and grimacing front fascia, the RAV4 exuded an aggressive appearance. The TRD Off-Road trim we tested had a base price of $38,295, with additional options like the Advanced Technology and Weather packages bringing the MSRP to $41,925. While the RAV4's TRD Off-Road edition featured robust design elements and an Army Green color, it was not a standout visually.

The RAV4 lineup spanned several trims, with prices for gas-engine models ranging from $28,675 to $38,295. Hybrids added a couple of thousand dollars more but offered better fuel efficiency. Interior materials in the RAV4 provided decent quality but leaned more towards practicality than luxury. Unlike the Compass, the RAV4's cabin was about utility, with features like full-width dashboard shelves, robust door handles, and easy-to-clean surfaces.

The 2023 Jeep Compass underwent significant improvements with a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, generating 200 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. Accessing the maximum power required higher revs, which could be a downside for some drivers. The 8-speed automatic transmission powered the front wheels, with an optional torque-vectoring AWD system. The TRD Off-Road trim came with specialized off-road suspension, underbody skid plates, and all-terrain tires.

The RAV4's Multi-Terrain Select system offered various driving modes similar to the Compass but did not improve ground clearance nor approach or departure angles. Despite this, its off-road capabilities were slightly more robust than lower RAV4 trims. The off-road suspension added comfort to daily driving by absorbing imperfections, while the vehicle maintained a decent fuel efficiency rating of 28 mpg combined, performing slightly better at 26.6 mpg during real-world testing.

Inside the 2023 Jeep Compass, the space was sufficient to accommodate adults in both seating rows. The narrow design contributed to better maneuverability in tight spaces. Rear seating was acceptable for adults, with generous foot room despite the snug legroom.
