2022 Jeep Compass Reviews Summary

Jeep now considers itself a premium brand. That means it prices its vehicles a little higher than the equivalents offered by mainstream nameplates but still below the traditional luxury marques.

In exchange for this price premium, Jeep offers class-leading off-roading capabilities, a Jeep Wave benefits program, admission into “the club” of Jeep owners, and, with some of its models, high-end trim levels loaded with upscale materials, finishes, and features.

This year, Jeep improves the 2022 Compass in an effort to better qualify it as a premium entry. Based on a week spent in the ritzy Compass High Altitude, we think the SUV is better it was than before. But does it meet the expected standard? Not quite.

2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

Look and feel

2022 Jeep Compass

7/10

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Compass, despite receiving exterior styling updates and new wheel designs, retained much of its familiar look since its 2017 redesign. It resembled a smaller version of the Grand Cherokee, with our High Altitude test vehicle featuring attractive 19-inch multi-spoke wheels that matched the paint, giving it an upscale appearance. Inside, the Compass High Altitude impressed with a new dashboard design, updated digital instrumentation, and luxury-grade leather seats, enhancing its premium SUV appeal. The lineup offered various trims, starting from the base Sport to the top-tier High Altitude, with prices ranging from $26,020 to $35,085, excluding destination charges. Our test model, equipped with all-wheel drive and additional option packages, had an MSRP of $40,470.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 showcased a design that connected it stylistically to the G70 compact luxury sedan, with features like split-bar headlights and a chrome line that hinted at a coupe-like SUV. Inside, the GV70's cabin exuded luxury with top-notch materials and a contemporary yet classic design. The dashboard featured a full touchscreen backed by a rotary dial and button controls, offering a user-friendly experience. The GV70 was available in gas-powered and electrified versions, with various trims offering a range of features. The Electrified Prestige trim, which we drove, impressed with its luxury credentials, featuring cream-colored quilt-stitched seats and a high-contrast interior design.

Performance

2022 Jeep Compass

5/10

2023 Genesis GV70

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Compass was equipped with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 177 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. Despite its "Tigershark" name, the engine lacked the power to compete with other SUVs, and a turbocharger would have improved its performance, especially at higher altitudes. The nine-speed automatic transmission aimed to maximize fuel efficiency but resulted in a busy and unrewarding powertrain character. The Compass offered Jeep Selec-Terrain with Auto, Snow, and Sand/Mud driving modes, and the Active Drive AWD system could send power to the rear wheels when needed. The EPA estimated 25 mpg in combined driving, but our testing averaged 23.8 mpg. The Compass had 8.1 inches of ground clearance, suitable for light off-roading, while the Trailhawk trim offered enhanced capabilities.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 2.5T featured a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.5T had a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD. The GV70 Electrified used a 77.4-kWh battery with dual motors, delivering 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a Boost Mode increasing output to 483 horsepower. The electric version offered 236 miles of range and fast charging capabilities. The GV70 provided a refined driving experience, blending comfort and handling, with the Electrified version leaning slightly more towards comfort.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Compass

2023 Genesis GV70

6/10

The 2022 Jeep Compass shared similar interior dimensions with the Renegade and Cherokee, offering enough space for four adults and their luggage. The High Altitude trim featured eight-way power-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats. The cabin boasted a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, a redesigned dashboard with a new infotainment screen, and improved perceived quality. The Compass offered 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 59.8 cubic feet with the seats folded, surpassing the Cherokee's capacity.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 provided 56.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 28.9 cubic feet with the seats in use, above average for the compact luxury SUV segment. The GV70 featured a hands-free power liftgate, large cupholders in the center console, and a retractable lid tray. While front-seat passengers found it easy to adjust to a comfortable position, rear-seat legroom was tighter, requiring front-row occupants to slide their seats forward. The rear bench reclined for added comfort.

Technology

2023 Genesis GV70

The 2022 Jeep Compass featured the new Uconnect 5 infotainment system, which was five times faster than its predecessor. It came with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, with a 10.1-inch upgrade available, and supported wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. The system offered over-the-air updates, a navigation system, connected services, a WiFi hotspot, and a wireless charging pad. The voice recognition system was fast and accurate, though it struggled with specific requests. Overall, Uconnect 5 impressed but wasn't the easiest to use.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 boasted a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system was user-friendly, with large icons and logical menu navigation. Genesis provided helpful buttons and a rotary dial for control, though its proximity to the rotary shifter could cause confusion. The GV70 included four USB ports, wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker stereo system. Ambient lighting, a digital instrument panel, and the Genesis digital key were available features.

Safety

2023 Genesis GV70

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Compass improved its safety features, offering forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Highway Assist, combining adaptive cruise control and lane-centering, was to be added later. The Compass had some issues with false positives from the forward-collision warning system and needed improvement in headlight performance. Safety ratings from IIHS and NHTSA were not available at the time of review.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 came with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technology, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, driver attention monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Advance Package on the 2.5T added a blind-spot camera system, reverse automatic emergency braking, and a 360-degree parking camera system. The Electrified version included most features as standard, with the head-up display available in the Prestige trim.
