2023 Dodge Hornet Reviews Summary

The Hornet is introduced as a compact utility vehicle, or CUV. This would seem to suggest that “compact” and “sport” are mutually exclusive (no shade on Dodge; they didn’t coin the term). But the Hornet defies that with its emphasis on power, attitude, and in-crowd fun.

Yes, the Hornet is also notable in that the 2024-model-year hybrid R/T is Dodge’s first electrified performance vehicle. But every automaker has—or will soon have to have—its own first electrified model. That in itself is these days remarkable only internally. However, we would argue that the Hornet represents a gateway with influence far outside the company as well: It creates a previously nonexistent pathway for the type of consumers the Dodge brand targets, who will now be able to take the step toward electrification without sacrificing their street cred.

2024 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

Though Mazda hasn’t redesigned its popular compact crossover SUV since 2017, a program of continuous refinement makes the 2024 CX-5 better than ever. It might even be too good. It has shared showroom space with the similarly sized Mazda CX-50 model since last year but continues to outsell its newer and slightly more expensive sibling. As it turns out, there are numerous reasons for that.

Verdict: Mazda positions the CX-5 as an SUV for active urbanites, and it serves perfectly in its role. Stylish design, taut dimensions, excellent outward visibility, a comfortable cabin, commendable quality, and impressive safety ratings make it a great choice. Plus, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 is genuinely enjoyable to drive.

Look and feel

2023 Dodge Hornet

8/10

2024 Mazda CX-5

9/10

The 2023 Dodge Hornet showcased a bold design that was unmistakably Dodge, with its wide, aggressive front end and signature "raccoon mask" face. The vehicle's muscle-car styling cues, such as the bulging hood and dual extractors, were complemented by the illuminated Rhombi logo on the taillights, making it stand out in traffic. However, from the side and rear, the Hornet bore a resemblance to the Porsche Macan or Cayenne, which might have felt less Dodge-like but added a premium touch. The choice of standard silver 17-inch wheels was divisive, with some finding them cheap-looking, though upgrades were available for those seeking a more striking appearance. Inside, the Hornet emphasized performance with red stitching accents and a flat-bottomed steering wheel, while seating options ranged from standard black cloth to more luxurious perforated leather.

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 retained its classic design from 2017, which continued to look modern and appealing. The new Carbon Turbo trim featured Zircon Sand paint and exclusive Terracotta leather seats, adding a touch of elegance. Mazda's improvements to the CX-5 included better fuel economy for the base engine and the addition of wireless charging and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in several trims. The CX-5 lineup offered a range of trims with varying features, from the base 2.5 S to the top-tier Turbo models. Despite being a compact crossover, the CX-5's interior felt upscale, with high-quality materials and a comfortable, if snug, seating arrangement for four adults. The cargo space was adequate for family trips, though slightly less than some competitors.

Performance

2023 Dodge Hornet

7/10

2024 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2023 Dodge Hornet boasted impressive performance stats, with its Hurricane 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine delivering 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This power output surpassed many competitors, including the Chevy Trailblazer and Honda HR-V. The Hornet's Sport mode enhanced throttle response and steering, achieving a zero-to-60 time of 6.5 seconds. While the base Hornet GT was responsive at lower speeds, it experienced some lag during acceleration at higher speeds. The Hornet R/T's hybrid powertrain offered improved pickup, making it a more balanced option for performance enthusiasts.

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Turbo, when fueled with premium gas, provided 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. On regular gas, it still delivered 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The CX-5's powertrain was more rewarding with a gradual acceleration approach, allowing the torque to build smoothly. However, its fuel efficiency was less impressive, with an observed 22.9 mpg in combined driving. The CX-5's driving experience was enhanced by its re-tuned suspension, standard all-wheel drive, and G-Vectoring Control Plus technology, offering a smooth and responsive ride. The CX-5 excelled in handling and stability, making it enjoyable to drive on various terrains.

Form and function

2023 Dodge Hornet

8/10

2024 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2023 Dodge Hornet's interior offered a driver-focused cockpit with a layout that favored the driver. The GT Plus trim featured comfortable leather seats with four-way powered lumbar adjustment and memory settings, while the base GT trim had cloth seats. The front passenger seat matched the driver's in adjustability, though without memory function. Visibility was generally good, though the A-pillar design occasionally obstructed views during left turns. The Hornet's interior was designed with performance in mind, with a focus on driver engagement.

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 provided standard heated front seats that were comfortable and supportive. The driver's seat offered six-way power adjustment, while passengers could manually adjust seat height. Leather upholstery was standard on most trims, with the top-tier Turbo Signature featuring premium Nappa leather. The CX-5's interior, though smaller than some competitors, was comfortable for four adults, with supportive rear seats and thoughtful features like rear air conditioning vents and a center armrest. The cabin's design and quality elevated the CX-5 above many mass-market rivals, offering a near-luxury experience.

Technology

2024 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2023 Dodge Hornet featured a driver-centric digital gauge cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen angled toward the driver. The Uconnect 5 system was intuitive and easy to use, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM, and Amazon Alexa connectivity. The GT Plus trim added a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and navigation. The Hornet's technology suite was comprehensive, though some features required touchscreen access.

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 took a different approach, favoring traditional controls over touchscreens to minimize driver distraction. However, it allowed touchscreen operation for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while driving. The 10.25-inch display was navigated using a console-mounted knob, with quick access buttons for essential functions. Mazda Connected Services offered remote engine starting and other features, while higher trims included a 10-speaker Bose sound system. The CX-5's technology was user-friendly, though its voice interface could be improved.

Safety

The 2023 Dodge Hornet came standard with advanced driver-assistance features, including blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. The Tech Pack added a surround-view camera and Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities. However, the Hornet had not yet been rated by safety organizations like the IIHS or NHTSA.

The 2024 Mazda CX-5 was equipped with a comprehensive suite of ADAS, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims offered additional safety features like adaptive headlights and a driver monitoring system. The CX-5 had previously earned a Top Safety Pick designation from the IIHS and received five-star ratings from the NHTSA, except for a four-star rollover resistance rating.
