2022 Mazda CX-30 Reviews Summary

As a brand, Mazda has been punching above its weight for well over a decade now. Whether it’s the three-row CX-9 SUV or Mazda3 compact car, you can expect a higher-quality interior and a more refined ride than respective rivals in a given segment. This is no different for the 2022 Mazda CX-30.

The CX-30 is a subcompact crossover SUV introduced as a 2020 model, supplementing the similar-sized Mazda CX-3. It carries over to the 2022 model year, just as the CX-3 has been discontinued. The CX-30 addresses the shortcomings of the CX-3 without losing any of that crossover’s positive attributes. The CX-30 has a more spacious cabin than the CX-3, but retains the fun-to-drive nature, and has an even more upscale cabin. Read on to learn how Mazda’s new subcompact SUV stands out within this popular vehicle segment.

2023 Buick Encore GX Reviews Summary

General Motors has big plans for Buick. The near-luxury division positioned between Chevrolet and Cadillac is slated to go all-electric by the end of the decade, with a fresh lineup of EVs highlighted by a new design language. But those new models aren’t scheduled to arrive for a few more years, so for now Buick carries on with a lineup of conventional gasoline crossover SUVs, of which the 2023 Buick Encore GX is the entry-level option.

The Encore GX was launched for the 2020 model year as a larger sibling to the Buick Encore, but the standard Encore is being discontinued, leaving only the GX for 2023. It slots below the Envision and Enclave in Buick’s three-model crossover lineup.

While Buick is generally considered a step up from mainstream brands, the Encore GX’s size and pricing are more in line with subcompact SUVs from mainstream brands, such as the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30, or the lifted-hatchback Subaru Crosstrek. In fact, the Encore GX shares powertrains and a basic platform with one of these vehicles—the Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The only change for 2023 is a new extra-cost Moonstone Gray Metallic paint option. That means the lineup still consists of base Preferred, mid-level Select, and top Essence trim levels. We tested out an Encore GX Essence for this review.

Look and feel

2022 Mazda CX-30

10/10

2023 Buick Encore GX

5/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-30 had the look and styling reminiscent of a downsized CX-5, with its upright grille and smooth, flowing fenders. Riding on the same platform as the Mazda3, the CX-30 was often likened to a raised-up version of the Mazda3 hatchback. Its raked windshield served as a greenhouse on sunny days, potentially causing a distraction due to a slight curve at eye-level for taller drivers.

Inside, the cabin was comfortable and quiet, exhibiting solid build quality. The interior design was lauded for its blend of conventional and digital displays, alongside an elegantly integrated infotainment screen. However, the functionality of the infotainment system suffered due to a steep learning curve. The trim levels ranged broadly from the 2.5 S to the Turbo Premium Plus, with each offering progressively more premium features such as leather upholstery, adaptive headlights, and an advanced driver assistance package.

Conversely, the 2023 Buick Encore GX did not reflect the marque’s rich design history. It broke from traditional Buick styling without introducing a new direction. Rounded surfaces and a tall stance created awkward proportions that did not appeal to fans of high-riding SUV aesthetics. Our test model, equipped with the optional Sport Touring Package, introduced some subtle styling tweaks like a black mesh grille with red inserts, but these differentiations were hardly noticeable without direct comparison to the standard model.

The Essence trim we tested boasted features typical of top trims such as leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control, but the extensive use of plastic diminished the luxurious feel. The interior design evoked the less desirable aspects of 1990s automotive styling, aside from the well-executed instrument cluster. Fit and finish were robust, but the overall design lacked appeal.

Performance

2022 Mazda CX-30

8/10

2023 Buick Encore GX

5/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-30 offered a base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. Our Turbo Premium Plus model carried a more powerful 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, generating 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel and 250 hp with 320 lb-ft torque on premium fuel. Power was delivered to all wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. Equipped with a Sport mode, the CX-30 delivered lively acceleration and precise downshifting—reminiscent of race-inspired vehicles, especially with its manual tap-shift mode and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The suspension provided a sporty, refined ride, with minimal body roll but did translate road imperfections on bumpier surfaces.

The 2023 Buick Encore GX provided a choice between two turbocharged three-cylinder engines: a 1.2-liter producing 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, and a 1.3-liter with 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. FWD models used a CVT, whereas AWD models were paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Our test model, the 1.3-liter AWD, offered better acceleration than expected, yet it required a patient driving style due to the turbocharged engine and the multi-geared transmission. The Encore GX excelled in delivering a quiet, comfortable ride—emphasized by its noise-canceling technology. However, its ponderous handling and significant body roll detracted from the driving experience, making it less enjoyable in various driving scenarios.

Form and function

2022 Mazda CX-30

7/10

2023 Buick Encore GX

7/10

In terms of cargo space, the 2022 Mazda CX-30 offered up to 45.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, and 20.2 cubic feet with the seats in use—figures that were average for the subcompact SUV segment. Our Turbo Premium Plus model's power rear liftgate added convenience. However, the design of the sliding center console cover caused minor usability issues when the rear seats were folded. Rear seats provided adequate short-to-medium trip comfort but lacked the spaciousness of larger SUVs like the CX-5.

The 2023 Buick Encore GX competed well in passenger space with rivals. Headroom in both rows was comparable to the CX-30 and other competitors, while legroom was slightly less generous compared to models like the Kia Seltos. The Encore GX offered 23.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up, expanding to 50.2 cubic feet when folded—exceeding the CX-30. However, the inboard placement of the front seats compromised spaciousness, and the front seats themselves lacked comfort due to insufficient thigh support. Small-item storage was well-thought-out, and the cabin included useful features such as a space-efficient wireless phone charger.

Technology

2022 Mazda CX-30

6/10

2023 Buick Encore GX

8/10

Technology-wise, the 2022 Mazda CX-30 had an aesthetically pleasing dash with an 8.8-inch infotainment screen controlled via a rotary dial and toggle buttons. This setup, inspired by luxury systems, unfortunately, borrowed from older designs that were clunky to use, especially with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which are more intuitive with touchscreens. The system's complexity remained a frustration even after familiarization.

The 2023 Buick Encore GX included a standard 8-inch touchscreen and a 4.2-inch driver information display, with an optional head-up display and navigation system. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth were standard, along with a Wi-Fi hotspot and SiriusXM radio. Two front USB ports were provided, but none for rear passengers. The user interface was efficient and aesthetically pleasing, though the 8-inch touchscreen was small compared to current standards. The system's straightforward usability and clear graphics were notable strengths.

Safety

2022 Mazda CX-30

9/10

2023 Buick Encore GX

9/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-30 came packed with driver-assistance features. Standard features included forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Our Turbo Premium Plus model added everything from blind-spot monitoring to a head-up display and front-and-rear parking sensors. It boasted high safety ratings, including a five-star NHTSA rating and a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS.

The 2023 Buick Encore GX also offered a range of standard safety features such as automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and forward collision warning. Optional add-ons included adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera system. The Encore GX received a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS for 2022, although its child-seat anchor ease of use scored an average rating.
